Welcome to Ms. Scordato's Page!

I am the English as a Second Language teacher for both Parkview and Joyce Kilmer schools, working with students in grades K-8. I’m here to support learners and families of all cultures and language levels. I have been teaching ESL for nine years and three of those years have been here in Milltown. I graduated in 2009 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Linguistics from Stony Brook University and have my standard teaching certification in English as a Second Language. Before working in Milltown, I worked as an ESL teacher and coordinator in Staten Island, NY for the NYC DOE. I also taught ESL to adults at my local community college before moving to New Jersey.

Being a part of the Milltown family for the past two summers, I was fortunate enough to lead an ESL Summer Camp here. I also have the opportunity to offer extra after school support for my newcomers during the school year. My ESL methods are based on all four language modalities (listening, speaking, reading and writing) as well as the WIDA English Language Development standards. These standards are:

  • Standard 1 – Social and Instructional Language:
English language learners communicate for social and instructional purposes within the school setting.
  • Standard 2 – Language of Language Arts:
English language learners communicate information, ideas and concepts necessary for academic success in the content area of language arts.
  • Standard 3 – Language of Mathematics:
English language learners communicate information, ideas and concepts necessary for academic success in the content area of mathematics.
  • Standard 4 – Language of Science:
English language learners communicate information, ideas and concepts necessary for academic success in the content area of science.
  • Standard 5 – Language of Social Studies:
English language learners communicate information, ideas and concepts necessary for academic success in the content area of social studies.

Every spring our ESL students get assessed on their English language proficiency using the “ACCESS for ELLs” test provided through WIDA. For more information on this please view the “WIDA Resource Library” at Resource Library or contact me so I can provide you with all the information and resources you need.

Feel free to reach out to me at ascordato@milltownps.org or through Parent Square for any questions or concerns you may have. I usually post announcements through Parent Square so be sure you are connected! If you need help getting connected just let me know!
